Carl qualified at University College Hospital, London in 1964 and spent a number of years in general dental practice in Brighton and in Hove. He began to specialise in 1980 studying at the Eastman Dental Hospital, London. Since 1990 he has been in solely specialist practice at Lister House in London. Carl joined Elms Lea Dental Practice in Brighton, where he has a dedicated endodontic surgery, in 2003.

Carl has been involved with teaching at Guy's Hospital, London and at The Eastman Dental Hospital, where he taught endodontics to MSc. students, He has lectured to dentists on numerous postgraduate courses on endodontics. He has also published a number of articles, instructional videos and books on the subject.

Formerly president of the British Endodontic Society, Carl is an active member of the European Society of Endodontics and an Associate Member of the American Society. Carl lives in Shoreham with his wife, Anne.
